Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

At our school, we understand that technology is large part of the lives of our children. Technology is everywhere, both home and school and we want to educate our children on how to use technology appropriately, safely and to their advantage. We want to provide an opportunity for children of all backgrounds to have the opportunity to engage with technology and learn different skills. In terms of social media and online gaming, we work tremendously hard to teach the children about the dangers of these platforms and what to do if these dangers occur but also have the skills and knowledge to use these platforms safely. As a school, we model this positive use though our social media.

Through a high-quality curriculum, we are allowing children to use computational thinking, creative thinking and a level of freedom to understand the technological world and apply their thoughts and ideas. Staff are also encouraged to use technology cross-curricular to allow their children to apply their skills in different situations and create wonderful projects.

Implementation

At Faith, we work closely with MGL who deliver a broad and balanced computing curriculum delivering the skills across 3 areas: computer science, digital literacy and information technology. Computing is taught to KS1 and KS2 by a skilled member of MGL.

In addition to this, we have a set of tablets provided to each class which are available the teachers and students to use for cross curricular activities. Using tablets allow the children to use the tablets indoors and outdoors, linking to our passion to outdoor learning.

This year, we have worked to create an updated action plan, computing policy and skills progression which highlights clearly what our intentions for using technology are.

For EYFS, the children have access to IPads which are installed with educational games for the children to use their problem solving and fine motor skills. The children are also exposed to the classroom’s large smart board which the teachers use to show the children how to research for information and use platforms such as YouTube to find educational videos to assist in learning.

Finally, the teachers at Faith are required to teach an ICT Safety lesson each term to ensure that different levels of internet safety are taught and children are reminded and required to think about how they use technology safely. ICT Safety lessons are taught from EYFS to Year 6, making all children aware that they need to be safe online.

Impact

By following the scheme provided by MGL, we are able to challenge the children to think about the skills they are learning. The children reflect on their learning and discuss how it can be applied to their every day lives or futures.

The lessons provided by MGL allow children to work towards an end goal and create a project that applies the skills that they have learned.

The quality of teaching is monitored through pupil voice, lesson observations and the monitoring of evidence that is provided on twitter and Seesaw. Evidence of some work is also published on the Computing page of the school website and is sometimes tweeted by the class teachers using the tag #computing.

Assessment

At Faith, we work closely with MGL our MGL coordinator and teacher will assess the children through both formative and summative assessments. At the end of each half term, the children complete a google forms quiz to assess the knowledge of the children. The judgements are sent to the senior leadership team.
