What is Phonics?

Phonics is a way of teaching children to read and write by matching the sounds of spoken English to individual or groups of letters.

At Faith Primary Academy, we believe that Phonics should be ‘hands on’ and fun in order to encourage your child to develop a positive relationship with reading and writing.

We follow the Read Write Inc programme of Phonics.

In June, Year 1 children take a short test called a ‘Phonics Screening Check’. This allows teachers to assess the children’s progress in reading and recognising sounds. Please see the information below regarding this.

Here are some useful documents to support your child at home.

Information for Parents: The Phonics Screening Check

The phonics screening check is a short, simple test taken by Year 1 children in England each June to assess their reading ability.  In June your child will complete the phonics screening test. To see an example of what this looks like click here to view an example paper.

Here are the 100 High Frequency Words that children should know by the end of Year 1. You can support your child at home by learning to read and spell these words.
